World Can Rely on Renewable Energy by 2050

Most people think that renewable energy sources are just a fringe addition to the non-renewable energy sources we use up every day. However, a recent report suggests that the world could actually be entirely reliant on renewable energy by 2050. The report goes on to note that although achieving this goal would require some hard work, it’s not only possible but necessary given the world’s huge energy problems.

The report, called The Energy Report, was put together by AMO, the research arm of an architect company called OMA. It was produced after a comprehensive two-year study that was done in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund and Ecofys, an energy company. The purpose of the report is to emphasize the problems that the world faces if we continue to rely on fossil fuels as well as to propose an action plan for addressing those problems. The plan is to gradually replace all fossil fuel use with the use of wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower and bio-energy.

The report begins:

"By 2050, we could get all the energy we need from renewable sources. This will solve most of the problems of climate change and dwindling fossil fuel resources. Paramount will be the substantive increase in measures to conserve energy in all sectors. We can show that such a transition is not only possible but also cost-effective, providing energy that is affordable for all and producing it in ways that can be sustained by the global economy and the planet."

The vision put forth by the report is of a world where every single individual would have equal access to renewable energy resources regardless of where they live in the world. In order to accomplish this big goal there would have to be more than just a shift to the use of renewable resources. There would also have to be a dramatic increase in energy conservation around the world. However, the authors say it’s possible. In fact, they say that although the anticipated world population in 2050 will be 9 billion people, we could actually reduce our total world energy demand by a full 15% through an active approach to conserving energy in all parts of our lives.

While it may be a bit of a stretch to think that the entire global economy could work together to completely eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the next forty years, it is a goal worth working towards. After all, every little bit of energy conservation helps!
